Horizontal and Vertical Alignment Assessment

Purpose:
- Assess vertical and horizontal alignment
- Identify areas for improvement
- Reflect on findings and plan for next steps
Directions:
- 1. Convene the HCMS Alignment Team and provide copies of Strengthening the Educator Workforce Through Human Resource Alignment and the Horizontal and Vertical Alignment Worksheet to each member.
- 2. Use the directions on pages 7-15 of the Strengthening the Educator Workforce Through Human Resource Alignment to complete vertical and horizontal competency alignment task.
- 3. Capture vertical and horizontal alignment ratings and notes in the Horizontal and Vertical Alignment Assessment.
- 4. Discuss the areas of improvement for each human resource practice and capture detailed notes.
Reflection Questions:
- How well do educator competencies align with HCMS practices?
- Which areas will you prioritize to work on first? Why?
- How does this analysis align, or not align, with the priorities in your and/or your partner organization’s strategic plan(s)?

- Use this analysis to frame strategic planning meetings with the organization’s executive leadership to further define or refine the HCMS practices at scale.
- Use this analysis to engage educators in discussions of what makes a great human resource practice from their perspective.
- Incorporate their perspectives into your design or re-design of the HCMS.
