Creating Effective Surveys: Best Practices in Survey Design

Purpose:

Learn and apply best practices for creating effective surveys.

Directions:

  1. Review your logic model. Where are do you intend to collect educator input? Where have you identified that you will collect data via surveys? For which outputs or outcomes do you need to create or repurpose surveys? Who will create the surveys? Who will administer them.
  2. Read Creating Effective Surveys: Best Practices in Survey Design on your own or with your evaluation team. The brief could be prereading to a discussion with your evaluation team.
  3. Review the General Practices in Survey Design on page 2 of the brief.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Which practices are your team’s strength? Which ones do you want to incorporate as you design or refine surveys?
  2. What steps have you taken to make your data collection more inclusive? What additional steps do you want to take?

  1. Identify next steps for survey development or refinement.
  2. If one of your action steps centers on demographic data and/or making surveys more inclusive, read and discuss More than Numbers: A Guide Toward Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Data Collection. What is an example included in the brief that is different than how you currently collect demographic data?
