Strengthening the Educator Workforce: Recruiting, Supporting, and Retaining Teacher Candidates from Traditionally Underserved Groups

Details:

  • Resource Type: Spotlight
  • Estimated time: 1 team session

Purpose:

Engage with this resource to consider the alignment between your organizational mission and your recruitment and retention strategies.

This grantee spotlight features key strategies of Mastery Charter Schools (TIF 2016) and the Center for Collaborative Education (SEED 2020), whose work focuses on broadening the teacher pipeline by identifying and supporting future educators who otherwise may not have seen teaching as a viable option for them.

Directions:

  1. Invite team members to read the spotlight.
  2. Convene the team and invite members to consider the reflection questions here to generate discussion and broaden your understanding of how to identify and support future educators.

Reflection Questions:

How do CCE and Mastery Charter’s missions drive their recruitment and retention strategies? What aspects of your organization’s mission drive your grant strategies?

How can you leverage your organization’s mission to recruit and retain effective teachers?

Whether you are a school district, preparation program, or education organization, what are you noticing are effective responsive supports for teacher candidates? How do you know they are effective? Whose role should it be to ensure they are in place?

  1. Consider how insight gained from reading this spotlight impacts one or more grant strategies. Pay close attention to the role different partners on your cross-organizational team play and how each contributes to the work.
  2. Examine the remaining resources in this entry point based on recruitment and retention practice gaps you discovered as a result of your team sessions.
