Designing Effective Teacher Leadership Positions in Human Capital Management Systems

Details:

  • Resource Type: Case Study
  • Estimated time: 1-3 hours of reading and meetings time

Purpose:

Apply job design principals to an educator leadership role

Directions:

  1. Convene the HCMS Alignment Team members focused on job design.
  2. Read Designing Effective Teacher Leadership Roles in Human Capital Management Systems, a case study on designing teacher leadership positions in an HCMS using job design principles.
  3. Hold a meeting to discuss the reflection questions and plan next steps.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What teacher or principal leadership role are you focusing on to design or re-design?
  2. What are the different job elements of the role (e.g., responsibilities, competencies, expectations)?
  3. Where does the leadership role fit in the HCMS and how does it align to the competencies of the position as well as the evaluation system?
  4. How might you incorporate job design elements (Table 2, page 11) into the position description(s)?
  5. Lastly, how does this analysis align with the rest of the HCMS system (e.g., Figure 1, p. 13)? Are there other HCMS practices that need updating (e.g., induction, hiring, placement, professional learning and so on)?
  1. After drafting a job description for the role, use the questions in Table 2 of Designing Effective Teacher Leadership Roles in Human Capital Management Systems (page 11) to clarify how job design elements might be incorporated into the leadership role. You might revise the job/position description and identify various supervisory elements that will change because of this analysis.
