To Affinity and Beyond!

These slides were created for the 2023 annual EED Summit. Affinity groups are a collection of people who share a common identity characteristic. Affinity groups have proven effective in building relationships in large organizations. We relate how we use affinity groups to build relationships, promote social-emotional learning, and create “brave spaces” for traditionally underrepresented populations of teachers, teacher candidates, and future teachers.

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe what affinity groups are, how they relate to SEL, and how they can promote equity in teacher preparation programs;
  2. Create and explain their own experience in creating affinity with other session participants.
